"Should we use WordPress or build something custom?" is one of the most common questions we're asked. Both are good answers in the right situation. The trick is matching the platform to what the website actually has to do.
When WordPress is the right choice
WordPress powers a huge share of the web for good reason. It's a strong fit when:
- The site is mostly pages, posts and forms: a business, practice, school or portfolio site.
- Your team wants to update text, images and pages without calling a developer.
- You need an online store and WooCommerce covers how you sell.
- You want a large pool of developers who could look after the site in future.
A WordPress site can still be fully custom-designed. Using WordPress doesn't mean using a template.
When a custom-built system makes more sense
Some jobs are software, not websites. Custom development is usually the better route when you need:
- Portals with different logins for students, clients, members or staff.
- A learning management system with courses, progress tracking and payments.
- Booking, registration or scheduling with rules specific to your business.
- Calculators, quoting tools or configurators.
- Integrations with accounting, CRM, courier or other systems that plugins don't handle well.
Trying to force these into a stack of plugins often costs more in the long run: plugins conflict, updates break things, and nobody fully understands how it fits together.
The middle ground
Many of the best projects combine both: a WordPress site your team manages, with a custom-built system behind the parts that need it. You get easy content editing and software that does exactly what your business needs.
What it means for maintenance
WordPress sites need regular updates to the core, plugins and themes, because those are the most common way sites get hacked. Custom systems have fewer moving parts from third parties, but they still need monitoring, backups and server care. Either way, plan for website maintenance from the start.
How we decide
We recommend the stack that fits the job and that you'll be able to hire for later, not whatever is trending. See how we approach website development and custom web development, or ask us which suits your project.
